Slide 1 — The Hook WHAT IF AI BECOMES BETTER THAN YOU? Imagine a machine that can: Write your essays Create your artwork Answer almost any question Do your future job Make decisions for you Then ask: What is left that makes you uniquely human? Pope Leo XIV — Magnifica Humanitas (2026) Slide 2 — What Is Magnifica Humanitas? Magnifica Humanitas means “The Magnificent Humanity.” Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical addresses one of the biggest transformations of our time: Artificial Intelligence But the encyclical is not simply about technology. It asks a deeper question: How can humanity use technology without losing its humanity? The Vatican describes the encyclical as being “On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence.” Slide 3 — Why Should We Care About AI? AI is no longer just something in science-fiction movies. It is already affecting: Education Employment Communication Business Healthcare Information Relationships Warfare Pope Leo XIV describes AI as part of a transformation with consequences for the future of humanity. Question: Is AI simply a tool, or is it changing the way we live as human beings? Slide 4 — What Makes a Human Person Different? AI can process information. AI can generate language. AI can imitate creativity. But Pope Leo XIV points toward something deeper: The human person has: Dignity Freedom Conscience Intelligence Relationships The capacity to love The capacity to seek God The encyclical emphasizes that every person is unique and irreplaceable. Think about it: Can a machine have human dignity? Slide 5 — AI: Servant or Master? WHO IS SERVING WHOM? Technology should help human beings. But what happens when: Humans → depend on technology Technology → influences human decisions Algorithms → determine opportunities AI → replaces human judgment The encyclical calls for responsibility, transparency and governance of AI. Key principle: Technology must remain at the service of the human person. Slide 6 — “What If AI Takes My Job?” Imagine graduating from college... Then discovering that an AI system can do your job: faster + cheaper + 24/7 Would that mean your work has no value? Pope Leo XIV connects AI with the dignity of work, unemployment and the need for an economy that values people rather than treating them simply as productive units. Discussion Question: Is the value of a person determined by how productive they are?
