As purity requirements increase, the need to accurately quantify ultra-trace impurities in high-purity REE matrices has become more critical. A key analytical challenge is the determination of trace impurities in the presence of a high REE matrix, which can generate significant spectral interferences and elevate background signals. Multi-quadrupole ICP-MS provides a robust solution by using a mass-filtering quadrupole prior to the reaction cell, allowing only the analyte mass to enter the cell. This prevents competing ions from forming unwanted reaction byproducts and enables controlled, predictable reaction chemistry. Residual interferences, including oxide and polyatomic species (MO⁺, MOH⁺, MH⁺, MOH₂⁺), are further addressed through the use of pure reaction gases such as ammonia (NH₃). These gases selectively react with either the analyte or interfering species, improving interference removal and enhancing detection capability. Stable operation with pure reaction gases is critical for achieving consistent ultra-trace measurements. This summarizes applications performed with the NexION® 5000 Multi-Quadrupole ICP-MS for the direct determination of trace REE impurities in a variety of high-purity rare earth oxides. Multi Quad mode combined with pure reaction gas chemistry enabled effective interference removal and low detection limits. The method demonstrates reliable quantification of ultra-trace impurities in complex, high-matrix samples.

Ultra-trace REE analysis is crucial for enhancing the performance of advanced materials by ensuring purity. The multi-quadrupole ICP-MS method effectively addresses spectral challenges through pre-cell mass filtering and NH3 for interference removal. The NexION 5000 demonstrates its capability to quantify impurities directly, achieving low detection limits and stable operation, ultimately providing reliable purity control for REE oxides.
