Kerajaan Kediri memiliki asal-usul yang kuat dari pembagian Kahuripan, dengan Panjalu sebagai pusat pemerintahan sejak 1042 M. Di bawah kepemimpinan Jayabaya, kerajaan ini mencapai puncak kejayaan dengan menyatukan Panjalu dan Jenggala, serta menciptakan birokrasi yang stabil.
