Compress PNG

PNG is a lossless format: it stores every pixel exactly. That is perfect for logos, screenshots, and graphics with text — but it means file sizes grow quickly, especially for images with many colors or photographic content.

Most PNGs found in the wild are unoptimized: they use 24-bit color for images that contain only a few hundred distinct colors, carry editing-software metadata, and use fast-but-weak compression settings chosen by whatever tool exported them.

The optimizer quantizes the palette intelligently — an image with 300 real colors doesn't need 16 million — and re-runs the deflate compressor at maximum effort. For screenshots and UI graphics this alone often halves the file.

Transparency (the alpha channel) is preserved exactly, which is the main reason to use PNG in the first place. Text stays crisp: unlike JPG, PNG compression never introduces blur or ringing around letters.

Metadata added by design tools — color profiles, editing history, preview images — is stripped automatically.

Use PNG for anything with sharp edges, flat colors, transparency or text: logos, icons, screenshots, diagrams, charts. Use JPG for photographs and complex gradients, where its perceptual compression is dramatically more efficient.

If you have a photo saved as PNG, no PNG optimizer can fix that mismatch — convert it to JPG instead and it will often shrink to a tenth of the size. Our JPG-to-PNG and PNG-to-JPG converters handle both directions.
